Birds of the Great Smoky Mountains?

Okay, as promised…more on our time in the Great Smokies! Now, if you’ve followed this blog for any time, you know that it’s about birds, but it’s also about my family and me, too. The reason I enjoy blogging so much is that it combines photography and creative writing, both of which are fun for me. I love being goofy and having you “laugh” (in your comments) at my silliness. I could just as easily blog about travel or restaurants or kangaroos and get just as much out of it. The pictures and writing are my favorite things!

So, that’s a pretty big introduction, and the reason is…drumroll…there are no birds in today’s blog! Oh no! Horror! The good news is that we have some cool mountain scenery and even some lovely fish. Consider it Dave’s Fish Watching Blog for the next few seconds. These are from Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee (which is where we stayed). I recommend both places highly!

It’s amazing the variety and color of fish that God created. Fish are much like birds in that regard…so many different kinds and some of the colors are incredible! So bright for something that lives under water. Anyway, the aquarium has a cool underwater tunnel that you walk through with sharks swimming overhead. They also have the required stingray touching, which our 7-year-old really enjoyed. I like the sharks best.

Now we smoothly transition into the hiking section…welcome to Dave’s Hiking Blog. Here’s our son with his Papa. They are great buddies and love to do many things together, which you will see pictures of in my next blog. This shot was taken along the trail leading out of Gatlinburg and into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I love, LOVE hiking along a mountain stream! Hiking through deep woods is death to me, but beside a stream or up on a ridge it becomes glorious! Is there a better sound than rushing water anywhere?

Here’s my lovely bride and her mom, known as Gammie to her grandkids. She, too, is a hiking enthusiast (like her husband). Don’t let her frog you though…she is stronger than steel! I wouldn’t know of course, because she would never lovingly punch her favorite son-in-law in the arm while playing Rook or anything.

And, well, this is yours truly holding the camera up in the air to get a self-portrait of me and the little guy. He enjoyed the hiking, too! Even went to sleep in the backpack.

If you’ve never been to the Smokies, you should go. You might even get to see a cool rainbow like we did on our first night there. If you look closely, you can even see a slight double rainbow to the right. The scenery there is great…awesome sunsets, misty mountains, lush greenery along the slopes. Yep, getcha a trip planned there real soon, and y’all come back for some more on these here mountains in my next blog, too! Dave

Isn’t it wonderful, Dave?????? There’s nothing better than the Smokies–but I’d never go there in the summer. Too many people around that time of year.
Hugs,
Betsy
Oh Dave, your scenery pictures are just outstanding in every way!!! They should be in ‘Our State North Carolina Magazine’

The heck with the birds ;-)
Ooooooo….so pretty. I can’t decide if I liked the one of the mist in the mountains the best, or the double rainbow.
Simply breathtaking!
No need for birds…these are just as enchanting!
