Sticks and house wrens invade bluebird box

Hi, everyone! As a late Father’s Day gift for Daddy, I’m going to do the bird blog today. We’ve got a lot to talk about actually, so I’ll go ahead and get started…plus my bottle time is coming up soon, and I don’t want to miss that. What? Can a 7-month-old kiddo really write and post his own blog? Sure! We babies can even buy our own stocks nowadays. Haven’t you seen those E*TRADE commercials?

Okay, as I was saying, BIG NEWS! We’ve got intruders in our bluebird house! Daddy went outside yesterday, and we had a whole bunch of sticks and twigs in the nestbox. Now, even a new bird watcher like me knew that meant trouble. Our last bluebird nest never looked like that, so I asked to do my playtime out on the deck with big brother and keep an eye out. Here’s a picture…

I sure do love my brother! He’s really gentle with me, and boy is he fun! He makes me laugh and cackle like no one else can. When I get big, I’m going to ride a bike and roller blade just like he does! So where was I? Oh yeah, pretty soon we started hearing this loud chattering noise…kind of like bird singing but different. I knew something was going on, so I grabbed the camera and started recording. Sure enough a little bird with a twig flew right over to the nestbox. Check it out…

So it’s not my best work…a little unsteady for my tastes, but what did you expect? I can’t even crawl yet! Anyway, Daddy showed me the pictures in our bird book and told me it was a house wren. That’s how they build their nests…with sticks. Pretty uncomfortable if you ask me. I like something with a little more padding and bounce to it. This is me in my “hopper” (below). I love to jump in it and stand on my tiptoes. I’m a good jumper!

I don’t think we had told you guys yet that our baby bluebirds finally did fly out of the box later in the day back on June 19. Remember that video Daddy showed you of the bluebird sticking his head out? Well, right after that, the mama bluebird flew to the deck and started screaming like crazy! Daddy thought that maybe our neighbor’s cat had come into the yard and that was why the mama was so upset. Well, he put the camera down and went to see what she was looking at…it was a snake! A big black snake was heading toward the nest! Those little birds heard mama’s alarm, popped right out, and flew up to a tree. Daddy completely missed getting a video of the birds flying out. Then the snake went under the deck and he missed that, too. He was so sad!

Well, my bottle is all ready, so I need to go. What’d ya think? Not bad for a little guy, huh? And you thought a seven month old couldn’t blog! Stay tuned to see what happens with our bluebirds and house wrens battling for the same space. It could get pretty interesting!

I can’t believe you just missed those babies fledging because of snake – that is so funny (especially when the little guy is telling the story ;-)
Bad news about the wren – they are almost as bad for bluebirds as the house sparrow. Mean and I would NOT allow them to nest there if you EVER want bluebirds again in your box. The wrens will be bonded to the box and fight to the death for it!
You have the most darling boys! And the little guy is getting BIG!

Now if that isn’t the cutest blogger in Blogville,I don’t know.He did a fine job on the post.I’m sure glad he included some pictures of himself.
Blessings,Ruth

The baby is adorable!
House wrens have such a pretty song, you will love hearing them sing when they are using your bird hotel!

Wow—-you are the cutest blogger I’ve ever seen in my entire life!!!! Thanks for doing Daddy’s blog today. You did a great job. Do you think Daddy may lose his job to you??????

I’m sick about the Wrens…I’d clean out that box and do what I could to keep the wrens AWAY. Maybe you could take the box down for a week.. Are the Bluebirds still around??? I know that they will start a new nest soon…

Please keep me posted in case I have this problem also. I don’t think we have too many wrens around other than the Carolina —but who knows… Right now, my Mama Blue is sitting on the four eggs. I’ll check about July 7–to see if they have hatched.

Thanks again for a great post, Little One. You are adorable.
Hugs,
Betsy

Dave or Mr Dave’s baby,

Such an adorable little guy..he really could do a commercial for bloggers..he’s cuter than the tv babies and he already knows his birds!! I can’t believe he is 8 months old already, seems like you were just mentioning the Mrs being pregnant…gosh how time flies!! Big brother really sounds like he is a big help!

I haven’t had any blues this summer…those nasty sparrows chased them away..and then they want to build their nests in the blues house..either myself or my husband seem to be going out on a weekly basis and opening the blue bird house door so the sparrows will leave..so frustrating..but I agree with Barb, if you let them stay they will return again and fight to nest there..I’ve heard this from others, also..so I don’t let any other bird start to nest in the bb house! Maybe mama wren will take up residence somewhere else near by..they are cute to watch and such a set of lungs!!

Neat post and video…

I too had my bluebird box invaded by house wrens. But I can tell you that they supplied me with the most beautiful songs anyone would want to hear, and this from morning until late evening. I have emptied the box now, and indeed they had filled my bluebird box to the top, unbelievable, but I miss their songs. As for the bluebirds, living in Michigan I am still waiting for them. But the hotel is ready, even for the little house wren. I loved the previous articles. It also shed some lights on why on earth there were so many twigs….
