Last peek at our bluebirds!

Sadly, it is day 12, and this will have to be our last look inside the nestbox. If we try any more visits, we risk scaring these little guys out before they can fly. They’re mobile enough now to hop or tumble out but they sure couldn’t get away from a cat that might be watching us all. That’s our oldest son doing the honors this morning.

That pink skin from a week ago is completely gone now, and these baby bluebirds are quite fluffy. Look at those feathers spreading out…wow! If you look closely, you can see they have their eyes open, too. Even though it is so tempting to reach in and hold them or pet them, you’re not supposed to. Click here to learn more about why not to pet them. Of course, when you homeschool and have such a great opportunity as this…

The nestlings are so big now, we really don’t have to even use the mirror! This picture below is just looking straight in at them. Well, they should fledge (fly out of the box) within the week. It could be anywhere from day 14 to 22, so I’ll keep you posted. I missed the first flights last summer, so I’d love to catch some this year. Keep checking back, and I’m sorry I never updated you on the mystery egg from late last week…I’ll try to do that (and answer the great questions you’ve been posting) tomorrow!  Dave

P.S. If you’re just joining the fun, click back through the older posts to see how they’ve grown and changed! Day 1 … Day 3 … Day 4 … Day 5 … Day 6 … Day 9 … Day 11

I can’t wait to see the baby blues fledge. Thanks for a great series of photos.

Oh how adorable, Dave…. Keep us posted. I too want to see the fledglings leave the nest… Last year, I tried and tried to watch for them to leave the nest–but missed them all.

I think my Bluebirds are getting ready to nest in our nest-box. There is some straw in the box–and I’ve seen the bluebirds around it today… Yeah Rah!!!!! (I hope!)

Dave, ahhhh how cute. Don’t be sad..you still will have them coming to your feeders in a few. I hope all that scarey carolina weather I have been hearing about is missing you and yours…
can’t believe how crazy these weather patterns have been.
Keep those little bird warm…we want to see fledglings soon!!

Hi Dave,
They are getting bigger and soon they will fly away without notice. Life is so beautiful. But yes, they will still be around at your feeder and this is alos very nice. have a nice week end.

Well you wouldn’t want these guys to fall out of the nest. I wish them well in their future and hope the have a wonderful life as Blue Birds. I wish we had them here.

Living in such wonderful places, so different from where I have lived, you might enjoy a look at The Hamlet of Gordon, Ohio. It is where I was born and raised and it is how small hamlets used to be and this one still exists.

That’s so sweet! It’s very considerate of you to consider the little birdies safety!

Love those little pinfeathers. Do I see BLUE?

GREAT SHOTS!

Your bluebird babies are so precious! It’s so nice to get a peek into their lives!
