Bluebirds bluebirds … watch them grow!

Greetings folks, and thanks for stopping by the ole bird watching blog again. Today is day four in our little bluebird biology lesson, and these guys are changing fast! If you’re just joining us, there are five Eastern bluebird nestlings mashed in there together, and we’re checking in on them daily. These pictures are from about 11 a.m. this morning. If you compare today’s pics with yesterday’s (either scroll down or click on “home” at the top of the page and then scroll down), you can really see the color changing on their heads and down their spine and wings. Can you believe how bright pink their skin used to be on Saturday? Amazing!

Since nobody really objected to the “too close! too close!” closeup yesterday, let’s see what’s going on with that color change… Ah, it’s lots of tiny feather sheaths starting to emerge. You can see them pretty well in this picture below. Kind of makes them look all prickly like a baby hedgehog or porcupine. Very interesting, since you think of baby birds as all cute and fluffy…these little guys are anything but! Of course, that’ll all change in several days. I bet you never knew you could fit into a nestbox like this, did you? Maybe you never wanted to! :-) See ya tomorrow.  Dave

P.S. Anyone else up late last night doing taxes? Yeah, me neither…(yawn)

Great shots, Dave..love to see the progress. Keep them pics coming!!

It is indeed amazing to see how fast they change.

No late-night taxes here. We got ours in early and managed to get our NC refund before they realized they were running out of money.

we love looking at your blog!!! great job!!!

You lucky guy. I pray for a nest of bluebirds. They are so adorable. A wonderful bird to have nesting for sure!!

Oh Dave, I’m so glad you are sharing the baby birds with us. I can see a difference with each passing day. Love seeing where the little feathers are coming in. NEAT!!!

Keep those pictures coming.
Hugs,
Betsy

More pictures! So cute!

Check my latest posting for my own nest of baby bluebirds. They do grow fast. By this time next week they will have their first feathers. I find it interesting that they make no sounds when opening their beaks for food, unlike the house sparrows who make a racket.

This is the second year baby bluebirds are being raised in this blue bird house. Last year I had two batches. I hope to have the same this year.

Great photos! Wonderful to see how quickly they change.

Love the bluebirds, U do a great job, Thanks for sharing.
