Four bluebird eggs hatch!

Welcome back, baby bluebird lovers! We have four bluebird nestlings and probably even a fifth by now! Saturday morning, my oldest son and I went out to check the nestbox…and there were two baby bluebirds! The nest had already been cleaned out, too…not an eggshell piece to be found anywhere. About four hours later we went back out with the camera, and this is what we saw! Two more eggs had hatched, and once again, all traces of their shells were gone.

I’m pretty sure that we saw the female take one of the shells out of the nestbox just before we came out that second time. She flew up to a wide branch about fifty feet from the box and 20 feet up in the air. She dropped what she was carrying onto the branch, jumped on it, pecked at it, wiped across it, and scratched at it. I’m guessing that it’s a way of protecting the nest, to take the shells far away and break them into small pieces. Then if a raccoon finds the leftovers, he’s not as close to a free meal.

I wasn’t able to check the nest this morning, so it’s still a mystery whether the last egg has hatched or not. I’ll check it tomorrow morning (Tuesday) and try to have the pictures posted by 1:30 that afternoon. See you then! Dave P.S. Our boys say hello, too!

Wow—four of five so far!!!! SO NEAT! I’m impressed that the Bluebirds are always so clean also… That’s neat how they always keep the nests clean.
I’ll be waiting for more updates as they happen.
Thanks so much!
Both of your sons are adorable!!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
Exciting news, even though those babies are not very cute. Now your boys, that is something else, they are sooo cute,or should I say good looking.I know that my 3 year old granddaughter does not like to be called cute.I still do,because she is cute.
Blessings,Ruth
How cool..they look like Easter egg shells.
It is so neat that you are able to photograph them and share them with us. Thanks!
Your boys are adorable – and your little one is growing fast! I love seeing these bluebird babies – I hope the last egg hatches!!
Aren’t they the most helpless looking little things? And I think you are absolutely right about the parents getting rid of the egg shells – a raccoon would love to have eggs for dinner! I hope your fifth egg hatches…sometimes they don’t. Great pictures and especially those darling boys of yours!
