Blue jay eating from my hand!

This morning I had the treat of a rare blue jay coming to my hand for some seed. He wasn’t that hungry, but it was exciting nonetheless. “Um, Dave, that’s not a real blue jay.” Well, technically he is real… maybe just not as lively as our other birds.

Confused? This little bit of humor (very little, you might be saying) is in response to my friend Shelley’s Birding in Michigan blog entries from earlier this week. We’ve playfully bantered back and forth on who is the real “bird whisperer” of the group. Here’s the history (and it’s worth a quick look if you haven’t seen her blog…she does a fantastic job).

So, game on! We have a bird eating out of hand challenge! That said, I fully expect Shelley to win. She’s not busy running a log cabin business or writing several thousand blogs at the same time, so she’s got more free time than I do. She does have a cat, though. Us, we’re just parents of a 6 year old and 4 month old looking for ways to fill up all the free time that we have… Dave :-)

LOL Dave at your Blue Jay!!! Wish I was at my log cabin this weekend – I could top you! I’ll let it be a surprise!
Also – besides my several thousand blogs you mentioned and my kitty – I do have a 10 year old stepson, run an online nature store AND help my husband at his business! Whew! Just wanted to make sure you knew how BUSY I was!! LOL! I should’ve been an orinthologist…..darn – too late now!

Can’t wait to see what you come up with! :-)

Now that’s funny! Wonder what Shelley has in mind?

Ha Dave…. You have your game going–when it comes to Shelley. BUT—remember, she’s the PRO when it comes to birds eating out of her hand… Maybe it’s her long hair!!! Why don’t you buy a wig—and maybe the bluejays really will eat out of your hand… (I’m staying out of this game–but I’m having fun watching from the stands!!!! ha)

Cute Post…
Hugs,
Betsy

Dave – you are hilarious – I busted out laughing last night when I saw this post. You sure had me fooled! I was so sure you got a bluejay on your hand — FUNNY!!!

Dave, I about choked on some tea I was drinking when I saw your photo!! I was laughing so hard my husband wanted to know what was so funny…and you say I’m a nut???
I don’t think your “baby hughie” bird will eat too much..he looks really stuffed to me….oh really bad..
I love a good yarn tho and will be looking forward to the-bird-eating-out-of-your-hand challenge between you and Shelley!

That was a great photo tho..loved it. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this post.

Good one Dave. My Wife and I just laughed right out loud!

We have a Blue Jay, we call JAY. he/she fell of a pine tree from nest. We took care of JAY for 2 1/2 months. JAY would follow us all around the place. JAY would go on our hair and shoulders whenever it needed to feel loved. Jay also slept in our house for the night. I would leave the door open so he/she could fly in and out of the house, that JAY done well. JAY is like a human, very intelligent when it comes to communicating with humans or i should say me, because we took very good care of JAY. JAY stayed with us for 2 1/2 months until a storm hit the area, we have not seen JAY since, What a sad ending, i’m feeling devastated..

Please if anyone can help me put a ending to this mystical chapter with the intelligent Blue Jay we had, I need it

The smartest bird in the world.
