First look inside our bluebird nestbox…

The bluebirds have finished their nest! Here’s a peek inside the box so you can see what they’ve built. The close-up below shows that it’s a mix of dead grass (abundantly supplied by yours truly’s neglect of our yard over the last few seasons), pine straw (hey you bluebirds, we pay for that stuff!), and some thin strands of mulch or bark. Honestly, it’s amazing to me how well birds can make a nest and how meticulous they are. So far, no eggs, but that will change soon. We expect egg laying to begin in the next few days…stay tuned!

Just as a reminder to those of you new to bluebirding, it’s okay to open and monitor your nestbox. It’s actually encouraged. That way you can keep tabs on your eggs and nestlings and be able to head off potential problems or intruders. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to observe and learn. Of course, you need to be sensitive to the bluebird parents and limit your trips to the box. Also, know that repeated trips will leave a scent trail and that you absolutely MUST have a baffle to avoid tragedy via raccoon or snake. Learn lots more about nestbox monitoring and being a bluebird landlord by clicking one of the links below. I also included a link to a little booklet I highly recommend called Enjoying Bluebirds More.

Finally, with no cute bird pictures to look at, I had to give you some of the latest pics of our boys. Our youngest is just at 4 months old right now and lots of fun! Big brother is really enjoying him, too!  Dave

Delightful pictures; the nest and the boys. The little guy is really growing. So Ty will be playing. I’ll bet he won’t make Sunday’s game, since Friday’s game is so late. (Well, OF COURSE we will be playing Sunday!)

That nest looks ready and waiting. It is so much fun to observe the birds in this way.Your ‘babies’ look great.Such handsome young boys and a blessing sent from God.

I love watching the bluebirds. They are such CLEAN birds. That nest they have made is neat. SOON—you’ll have some little baby bluebirds in there!!!! Yeah!!!

Your boys are so adorable. The older one is such a good big-brother, isn’t he??? The baby is growing like weeds.

Thanks for sharing.
