Brown-headed nuthatch delights!

Okay, seriously… you gotta get one of these fun, little birds! Not that you get to choose which birds come to your yard, of course, but brown-headed nuthatches are great! They’re about the size of a chickadee and just a little more curious. Plus, they’re even cuter in my opinion. We’ve got two of them right now that are coming every day to our deck for safflower seeds. I had never seen them before this winter, but now they’re right under the bluebirds as one of my favorites.

I love the little white spot on the back of their heads and also the fun squeaking sound they make. The other day I was putting seed into the plate, and one of the nuthatches flies to the hook that our finch seed is on…about a foot from my head at that point. I figure, “Why not try to get it to eat something from my hand?” Slowly, I lift my hand toward the hook, and the little bird flies right into it! Awesome! It grabbed a seed and quickly left, but still…what a treat! I’m telling you, these guys will steal your bird-loving heart! Dave

Nice pics of some great little birds! I also love my nuthatches. We’ve had quite a few of them this winter, both brown-heads like yours and also white-breasted nuthatches. They’re playful little acrobats. I’m quite jealous of your hand-feeding story. I can get within a few feet of mine but have never fed them by hand.
How pretty, Dave… I have NEVER seen one of them. What a nice surprise for you.
Thanks for sharing.

What fun little birds they must be. They are just lovely to look at. I don’t think they come around our area. Thanks for sharing yours.
BTW – I’m taking the ‘Heels all the way despite Lawson’s toe. Oh, this March Madness is GREAT! Gotta run, almost game time.
Mine are red-breasted and white-breasted. I have yet to see a brown-headed nuthatch here. You have a couple of nice ones there. Now I must remember what eats safflower seed.
I agree they are very cute. They come every day to my feeder. This past week I have one who is much smaller and much lighter in coloring. I don’t know if this is a juvenile or something else altogether. The markings are definitely the same, it’s just the size and color shades that are different.
