Five bluebird eggs in the nest!

Three… then four… now five… five bluebird eggs! Awesome! We figure that Saturday was egg #4, and Sunday was egg #5, so that means today is day two for egg sitting. Our female bluebird is definitely on the nest most of the time now. I accidentally scared her out this morning when I opened the [...]

Three bluebird eggs already!

Wow! Now how’d that happen? Eastern bluebirds only lay one egg a day, so either I missed an egg when I checked on Wednesday, or mama blue put one in there right after I left. I saw her yesterday morning coming out after a long time inside the nestbox, so I had figured that would [...]

First look inside our bluebird nestbox…

The bluebirds have finished their nest! Here’s a peek inside the box so you can see what they’ve built. The close-up below shows that it’s a mix of dead grass (abundantly supplied by yours truly’s neglect of our yard over the last few seasons), pine straw (hey you bluebirds, we pay for that stuff!), and some thin [...]

Brown-headed nuthatch delights!

Okay, seriously… you gotta get one of these fun, little birds! Not that you get to choose which birds come to your yard, of course, but brown-headed nuthatches are great! They’re about the size of a chickadee and just a little more curious. Plus, they’re even cuter in my opinion. We’ve got two of them [...]

Bluebirds building a nest

It’s official, we have a bluebird nest! No eggs yet, but the female blue has built a full cup of pine straw and grass inside our bluebird box. Can’t wait for another season of baby bluebirds! Dave

Salmonella bird seed recall hits Wild Birds Unlimited

Wild Birds Unlimited has just pulled its Wildlife Blend bird food from shelves due to fears of salmonella poisoning. It’s the 20 pound bag with the specific code of 81132200 2916 08124. WBU’s supplier, Burkmann Feeds, issued the voluntary recall after some tests by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture showed salmonella bacteria was present [...]

Spring spring cedar waxwing

I’ve said it before, but there is perhaps no cooler-looking bird than a cedar waxwing. I was out walking on a break at work the other day and got to see a group of them fairly low in a tree. Normally they are way up there in the distant treetops and far out of the [...]

Female bluebird posing in the snow

Here are some more of our wintry pics from the fun snow on Monday morning. Most of it’s melted by now…just a few lingering spots left in the shade. I’m always sad to see it go, but it sure was beautiful to see!

On Tuesday’s blog, the male bluebird got all the love, so today I’m [...]

Bluebirds and a March snowstorm!

Nothing could be finer than some snow in Carolina! Well, it’s March here in the Tar Heel state, and we just got a couple inches of snow…woo-hoo! I don’t have much time to write, but these are some of our pictures from yesterday. The first two bluebird gems are gifts from my wife! She picked up [...]
