Feeding a Carolina wren by hand!

Normally I’m not this quick with uploading pictures, but all six of these are from this morning. I finally got some pics of our Carolina wren eating out of my hand! Our six-year-old son got to feed him three times by hand yesterday, but the little bird was so fast, I never got him on film. This morning I changed some settings and just let the camera roll…click, click, click on auto every half second or so. Even with that, the last photo is a blur. He got his peanut and took off! Here’s the progression, with a splash of color added at the end for fun (our bluebirds are nest building…woo hoo!). Hope you enjoy!  Dave

Now that is trust, or some really good peanuts!

Craig

That is priceless. Make sure that bluebird gets his mealworms. LOL

Oh Dave, that is so special… Your son will remember this FOREVER. I love those little Carolina wrens… Too Cute!!! And of course, I love the bluebirds.

Thanks so much for sharing.
Hugs,
Betsy

Just the neatest! Carolina wrens are so darn cute! Great job!
That bluebird looks remotely interested ;-)

WOW!! That is awesome Dave! Now you have to try the mealworms!! ;)

What great memories you are storing up for you son. Wonderful photographs, every one of them.

Craig, hopefully they aren’t the salmonella kind!

Ruth, thank you! Once we have nestlings, we’ll do some mealworms…too expensive for now. :-)

Betsy, I’ll try to get you a pic of our son doing the feeding. That’ll be really cute!

BG, for my next trick, I’ll try to feed the butter butts and really make you jealous! ;-) ‘Course I’m jealous of your hawks and deer and bald eagles and zebra and giraffe and pandas and…

Ashleigh, the bluebirds do eat out of our hand! At least they did last spring. See this entry from last June (click here).

NCMW, thanks! Big ACC game tonight, too. I’m hoping Maryland will knock off Duke like they did our beloved Heels on Saturday. Rats!

Hi, Dave!

Love your blog with its fantastic pictures and excellent writing but have to disagree with your somewhat misplaced basketball affiliation. Go Duke!!!

How sweet! Great photos – I could see the wren concentrating on the hand. i didn’t know the wren could be that tame too! I’m too busy chasing my chickadees around with outstretched hands! Yes – get out the mealworms and feed those bluebirds!!

Dave,
Wow you did it! Cute wren.. I think he is used to taking the food, turning and getting out of there…he looks like he is pigeon toed from his get away behavior.
So glad to hear you have the blues nesting…we are waiting…crossing our fingers! :)

Very cute! I’m from Italy and when i will come there i will try to do the same :-)

Dave, I am so jealous!! I can hardly even get them in my yard. And they are not touching the mealworms we put out!

How cool is that!!

Diane at the beach, thank you thank you! Even Duke fans are welcome at ye olde bird watching blog. :-)

Shelley, so far our chickadees don’t seem interested. Maybe when they see the blues eating our mealworms, they’ll come over too! Good luck to you, though!

Tina, saw some more grass and pine straw going in the box this weekend! I’m with you, hoping for some eggs in the next month or so… :-)

Roberto, welcome! Italy…that’s amazing. The internet and Google blow me away at times!

Ashleigh, patience patience. :-) Once they discover the worms, you’ll be dipping into your savings in no time to finance the hobby! Are you using live mealworms?

Mel, greetings! You’re officially my first visitor (at least who left a comment) from South America. Wow!

Yes, they are live. And I haven’t seen one of them being eaten. Today I have TONS of robins in my yard. What is up with that? What are they after? As you can see I am a novice on birds, but am enjoying them nonetheless!

The robins are indeed out like crazy right now…I’m not sure exactly what they’re after though. I’ve seen them more up in the trees than down on the ground looking for worms. Ours have been eating the holly berries on some bushes in our yard.

Some of these pics would make really nice postcards… or stationary. Hey, maybe there’s a side business for you!

I am raising baby wrens and don’t know what to do. All but one have opend their eyes and they are soo cute.

Natalie, I would feed them mealworms but only if the parents aren’t around and doing it already. Are they in a nest outside, or do you have them inside somewhere?

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing. I love my little wrens :)
