Wintry waxwings and snowy bluebirds!

Is there a cooler-looking bird anywhere than a cedar waxwing? These birds are awesome! I just wish that they had flown into our yard. As it is, I’m very thankful for our friend Ben Tangeman for taking these two pictures and letting me use them. They’re such unique birds (and rare here in NC), but with the snowy background, they look absolutely amazing! Thanks, Ben!

Now you already know how much I love snow, and how much I love bluebirds, so…bluebirds in the snow…priceless! Yet, these pictures are not from our yard either. Dave Bertram (formerly anonymous as DB), took them. He’s a very kind co-worker and a great photographer. You should see the next round of his stuff I’ll show you on Wednesday. Gorgeous wintry shots of cardinals, woodpeckers, and I saved his best bluebird captures for then, too!

So did I take any of these photos? Well, only the one up above of our two sons this past weekend. Our littlest guy is really starting to grow, and I love those cute, little sleepers with the feet that you get to wrap them up in during winter. Still, my favorite picture of the whole lot of them today is this last one…taken by our six-year-old. He literally camped out beside this diaper change and waited, waited with the camera to snap this fun shot of our now 8-week-old son. Love it!!! More later this week, and thanks again to Ben and Dave B! Dave

Lovely pictures of the birds and the boys.
Blessings,Ruth

Dave, Your sons BOTH are so so handsome!!!! I know you are a proud Daddy!!!! Congrats again. I like that last one also.

I’m glad your co-worker allowed you to show his bird pictures. I haven’t ever seen a Cedar Waxwing–so seeing the pictures helps some!!!! Maybe someday I’ll see one. AND-you know how much I love the bluebirds and cardinals. WOW!!1 Thank him for us!!!!

Have a great week…Don’t spoil those precious sons.
Hugs,
Betsy

I love the cedar waxwings, they say they are around here, but I have yet to see them. Great pictures, the baby is getting big fast! :)

Dave,
I got to see my first cedar wax wing this fall and immediately fell in love with them..its name now rests right under the blue bird as my 2nd fav! I love that second photo! I hear it is tough to get a close up of these guys..the ones I photographed were in the tree tops..but I was still able to admire all those stunning colors!
Good to see you still have some snow..are you getting any of this new stuff coming tomorrow? Hope so..in fact I hope it drifts south and you get it all! lol
Love those guy shots! How cute is that last one, I would have camped out for a look at those eyes too! great job!!

Eight weeks already – I can’t believe it – time goes by so quickly. And so precious for your little guy to wait for the best shot of his baby brother – perfect!
The cedar waxwings are breathtaking in that snow – wish I could see some! And what are those bluebirds eating – not sunflower seeds???
You have nice friends to share such neat pictures with us out here in blogger land ;-)

Thanks, Ruth!

Betsy, I’ll definitely tell him. You’ll love the other cardinal and bluebird pictures he shot…those birds are so beautiful in the falling snow!

Candice, I’ve only seen the waxwings once myself…a flock of about 20 in a little crepe-myrtle tree. I was in awe because I’d never seen them before…but sadly had no camera with me. Aren’t they incredible!

Tina, sadly our snow is long gone now. This round today and tonight is only bringing us cold rain, which is perhaps the worst weather you can ever have in my opinion. Will you get ice or snow from it?

BG, the eight weeks seems long when you are living it but strangely short when you look back and reflect on it, so you’re right. The bluebirds are eating seed…little sunflower chips and safflower seeds (thankfully)…those mealworms get expensive! We can only afford them in nesting season. :-)

We are getting snow, ice and then rain!! Maybe you should move north..and I should move south..lol!!

Wish those waxwings would come visit me! Love the photos of your 2 precious boys! They look so happy and content!

Those bluebirds look so cold!

Great Cedar Waxwing pics. I love CWs. They look so sleek. :) All winter we have flocks of them moving around from the cedars to the different hollies.

Hi Dave,
I love the waxings. They are wonderful bird, funny, colorful and with nice songs. it happens that we do have the bohemian waxings in winter in Iceland, with a high record this year. almost 50 individuals. I love your first shot in the snow, wonderful!!!

Chris, wow…Iceland…that’s so cool! How much daylight are you getting there these days? Thanks for the visit!

Hi Dave,
Daylight is increasing now, so we have between 4-5 Hrs light today…
But it goes down to 2h in winter if you can call that light!!!

And by the way, yesterday they spotted around 100 waxings in the east coast of Iceland, so their number has been incredibly high in Iceland this winter around 200!!!

I’m watching dozens of cedar waxwings outside my kitchen window. They, and also dozens of robins, are stripping the berries off of a snow-covered holly tree. They are beautiful! What a treat.
I’m in NC and we are enjoying the unseasonable snow.

Martha, thanks for the visit! I saw some waxwings this morning in our yard, too. They are so beautiful against the snow. I love it! Not sure what the connection is between robins and waxwings, but I’ve noticed lots of them together this winter.

We had a large flock of cedar waxwings come into our yard in February. They stayed for about a week to eat the berries off the many large holly bushes in the backyard. I had never seen any before and was totally amazed at their beauty and behaviors. I hope they come back next year. We took pictures but our camera isn’t great.

I forgot to add that we’re in Winston Salem, NC. I had to ID these birds since this is a first for seeing the Cedar Waxwings here.

Barbara, welcome! Aren’t they gorgeous? Truly amazing birds with all the colors and crisp edges. I love them! We usually head up your way (Winston-Salem) this time of year for the annual NC Homeschool Conference. Sadly we’re not making the trek this year…just too busy!
