Nuthatch in a bluebird box?

Hmmmm…not sure how I feel about this one. The bluebird box is sacred territory in the Heiser household, and even a cute, previously unseen, brown-headed nuthatch may not be allowed to stake such a claim as this. It landed on our deck earlier this week, and I was thrilled! Then, I watched it fly over to our nestbox and start exploring…dart in and come back out…hop around on the side…check out the roof…go back inside… Anyway you get the idea. I grabbed the camera and took my pictures while this fun little bird kept up his (or maybe her) inspection. I never scared it off, but I heard “Squatter’s rights! Squatter’s rights!” being chirped loudly at me after it flew to a nearby bush. We’ll see how this progresses…
And speaking of cute…how about this brotherly love shot? Enjoy the weekend everybody, and remember any prayers for imminent snowstorms in central North Carolina are always much appreciated (right now we’re wasting some excellent cold weather with an otherwise beautiful, sunny day…rats!). Dave

Hi Dave, good to hear from you and the brood!
So, does that make it a Nut house now? sorry couldn’t resest the nuthatch pun…
Craig
The Nuthatch seems to think he owns the place.Hope the Bulebirds still have a home.About the snow, you’re on your own there, but I would gladly share some of our cold temps with you.
Blessings,Ruth
Dave, I think you are right in keeping that nut away from the blues house. I run out to ours all the time getting rid of those that even stop in for a visit…probably should have taken it down for the winter. Love the brother photo..glad to see you post..know you are busy! So wish we could send some of these cold and snowy days your way..did run into a sm flock of bluebirds the other day, wow couldn’t wait to get home and post..what is it about those birds?? take it easy!
Maybe the Nuthatch is just keeping the house warm and comfy –for the bluebirds to return to in the spring!!!!! A Downy has checked out our bluebird nest box–but I don’t think he is living in it now…. Like you, I am WAITING for our bluebirds to come and nest in the spring. Yeah!!!
Great picture of big brother with little brother!!

I think maybe the nuthatch was being curious! Cute! And how cute is your son hugging his baby brother?!!
I hope Shelley is right about the nuthatch being curious. I googled the subject and they will use a nest box – so…I’m with you…the bluebird box is sacred! One year my sister got flycatchers in her bluebird box, though…and it was a beautiful gift! She got so many gorgeous pictures of a bird that is extremely private – so keep an open mind ;-)haha
Your boys are adorable!

Thanks everyone! Haven’t seen the nuthatch come back, so I guess it’s officially NOT a nuthouse! :-)
WE GOT SNOW! WE GOT SNOW! Last night it started snowing around midnight and it has kept up all morning! Beautiful, heavy white snow! AWESOME! LOVE IT! It wasn’t even forecasted until a day or so before, so it ended up being a wonderful surprise GIFT! HALLELUJAH! Woo-hoo! Pics coming soon…
