Suet disappearing at night…possibly a possum perhaps?

Finally took some fresh pictures this weekend so I’d have something new to post. We made some fresh suet last weekend, but it’s already gone! The titmice and chickadees were all over it (no downy woodpeckers sadly), as were a few squirrels, but we seemed to have a nocturnal visitor a few nights that really just shredded it. We suspect a possum or raccoon maybe. Seems like one of you all had been bringing stuff in at night to avoid possum trouble, but I can’t remember who it was… Looks like we’ll have to start doing the same thing.
We’ve had a few bluebird sightings over the past week, but no good opportunities for pictures. We have had however, an unexpected and previously unseen (in our yard) bird inquiring into the availability of the bluebird nestbox. I’ll share the pictures later this week! Dave
P.S. Of course I threw in another fun kiddo picture at the end. Big brother is really enjoying his new sibling, and little brother loves using his newly discovered smile ability with big brother. :-)

I hate to break it to you my friend but I think it’s those menacing maniacal squirrels! They clean out my suit before the birds get a whiff! Anybody have any anti squirrel suit feeder ideas?
Nice shots as always Dave!

Hi Dave, That little guy gets cuter every day. Big Brother seems to adore him!!!!
I take my suet feeder inside at night–to keep the night critters away. It’s not hard to do–and I now have it in my schedule.
Great pictures. Love that Chipping Sparrow. I haven’t seen one of them around here. We have a Song Sparrow and a Carolina Wren–plus the others you have (except juncos).
My best to your family.

At first I loved your bird photographs. Then I saw the last picture and forgot all about birds. You are one lucky man.
Dave,
We, luckily, don’t have night critters to devour our suet, but my suet feeders contain that “store bought stuff” not the Heiser Special suet that you put into yours!! You are just too good of a cook..
Love the cardinal in the tree pix, great capture, but right now not a cardinal fan. tee he
You are getting such great photo memories of your sons..that capture is precious. A lifer, as they say in the bird community!!
Glad to hear all is going well!
I think it might be the squirrels or racoons robbing you! The cardinal looks so nice in the red against red feeder! And your boys are beautiful!!!
Dave, I sometimes bring in my suet – but mostly my hummingbird feeders – raccoons just trash them if they find them. And it isn’t so bad that they drink it – but they puncture the hard plastic with their sharp teeth! Makes me angry but what can you do?
You got some great bird shots – but that last picture of your boys just melts my heart!
I’m writing from South Georgia where Cardinals abound. Something like 5 or 6 male cardinals come to my feeders daily, along with perhaps 3 or 4 females. They come in separate groups. The guys run the ladies off as soon as they see ‘em, forcing the ladies to wait in my huge pittisporum whilst the guys gorge. That will change soon, and ladies will presumably get their revenge. Item of note–one of my guys is pink. Not that brillant cardinal red, but pink! When he first showed up, his color was just beginning to come in and I thought it would darken up. But, nope. I’ll watch to see if he has any trouble attracting the ladies’ interest and let you know how old Pinkie makes out.
Those are beautiful cardinals! And beautiful children!!! We have a beautiful set of cardinals that dazzle me outside of our window here in Asheville too, though we do not have the beautiful captivating children to watch. At least, not yet. ;)
Cheers ~ and fantastic blogging, Dave! :)
