Pelicans and Fort Myers Beach

sandpiper-lg-reverse.JPG
pelican-swim-reflection.JPGJust a few more Florida pictures for you today, and then it’ll be back to the bluebirds. I’m not sure what this sandpiper is up above…I’d love your input. It honestly looks like a duck to me, except with the wrong beak and legs attached. Anyway, he or she was walking along the shore on Ft Myers Beach with us, and this brown pelican was out swimming in the shallow water. The shell picture below shows just how abundant the seashells really are down there, and they’re even more so on Sanibel. Our favorite shells are the crowns, olives, and whole sand dollars.

There’s one more shot of our mystery bird below and then a fun close-up of four brown pelicans. They were right beside a dock where some fisherman were cleaning their catch and tossing them the scraps. I love seeing how much their pouch can stretch when they get a fish.

Back to North Carolina birds next week!  Dave

LOvely picture of the Brown Pelicans. They look like they are posing for a picture.

Dave,
We seem to both have this mystery bird post going on…and interestingly when I dragged out my Sanibel info on birding, the picture of your “bird of interest” looks very much like the ones shown of a wintering Willet…and when I looked in my Birds of North Am. book the information given, about Willets, compare their bill size and length to that of a Greater Yellowlegs..which is what I think my mystery bird might be!!..lol small world!
LOVE the pelican picture, great composition and such detail! Nice!! Have a good weekend!

Ruth, thank you. The pelicans were probably just thinking, “Hey bud, put down the camera and throw us some fish!”

Tina, thanks for the mystery bird thought. Willet…never hear of those before, but I’ll check it out. Pelicans have always been a favorite of mine, so it was neat to see them so close! I’m coming to look at your mystery bird pic now.

I love that last picture of the four pelicans. WOW!!!!! (We got home tonight from Buffalo only to find that the bird feed I left out had been gobbled up by something other than a bird… Hope he/she enjoyed it!!!! I’m gonna give them some extra-special breakfast tomorrow. Do you think they’ll be happy that I am home????? ha)

Betsy, so what’s the extra-special breakfast? Sounds like you’re planning something devious to get back at the raccoon or squirrel you’ve been feeding. :-)

Any snow while you were in Buffalo? Your Titans sure got a big win last night!

I too wanted to add kudos to the shot with the four pelicans. It’s stellar!

Thanks, Sweet Bay!

Love the pelican shot! They’re just such great birds!
