Hummingbirds and butterflies…

lake-hummer-9-13.JPGGreetings, folks! We spent the weekend up at Lake Gaston, NC visiting my parents and saw some wonderful wildlife! Only two of the pictures today are birds, but I really liked the others and figured you would, too. We know the spider is a yellow garden spider (vincas in the background), but I haven’t done my homework yet on the other pics. I think the next one is a groundhog (he’s been bothering my dad’s yard lately), then a cool butterfly on some different flowers. Mom, I should’ve asked you what they were before posting this! Can you help?

And finally, you’ve already met my son, but I wanted to also introduce my lovely wife. We had a great boat ride Sunday evening where we felt like we were literally right in the middle of this spectacular sunset. Gorgeous colors reflecting on the lake…wow!  Dave

these are the best pictures ever! wow! how did you get a pic of that ground hog??? that is sooo cool! I’ll have to show these pics to the boys tomorrow

Wow! A bunch of really nice pictures – LOVE the spider with the floral background & the hummer, too! Nice to meet your family and the sky is beautiful!
Butterflies are stunning!

Hi, Dave!

What great pictures! I’m thinking the yellow flower is a marigold and the pink one is a succulent called sedem or seedem, given to me by my sister in Indiana (originally from our mom’s flower bed in Logansport, IN). Love those butterflies and also your family picture! Great sunset!!!

Mavis, would you believe he let me get within about four feet of him? He kept hunching down, then after a minute he would stretch up and look at me again. If I got too close, he would back into the drain pipe…but then come back again after another minute. He was very curious, and I think a curious groundhog in September means record snow for North Carolina this winter! Yeah!!!

(by the way you can visit Mavis’ nutty blog at http://www.mavdavhouse.blogspot.com/ but watch out for the bright pink background. I recommend sunglasses first…it’s not about birds at all, just life) :-)

BG, many thanks! The spider and vincas picture is one of my favorites, too. Just missed getting a fun picture of a kingfisher that you would have enjoyed, I think. Also, I found out the butterfly is an American Lady. So glad to have you still visiting!

(Bird Girl has an amazing blog that is definitely worth visiting…called My Bird Tales)

Mom, thanks for the flower info! The beauty in the yard is a direct result of your hard work (and dad’s too, of course). I just get the fun of taking the pictures!

We enjoyed the visit so much, and what a fun last boat ride! Thank you!!!

Glad we found each other’s blog. I know Holly Springs well, having lived in Charlotte for several years. I look forward to following your blog and reading the archives.

Thanks, we love the mountains, so it’ll be fun to enjoy your beautiful scenery shots!

VERY nice pics dave, really like the ones of the butterfly. Especially the one showing the cream color design on the under side. Nice picture of your family and a to-die-for sunset!! ahhh is that a pic of large wings flapping…? :-) that’s great!

Uh-oh, Tina, large wings overhead…everyone inside, quick!!!

Dave I really think you’ve caught a woodchuck rather than a groundhog. They’re regular visitors at my house and I have many pics of them. You’re butterflies are wonderful and I love all of your shots.

Barbara, thanks for the help and blog visit!
