Ant guard or bird drinking fountain?
Hi again! Sorry for the delay in posting this week…hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. We were inside painting a lot, so I haven’t spent too much time out on the deck recently. I did catch this mourning dove at our seed plate today. My wife nicknamed it “Hoover” because it sucks up seed like a vacuum cleaner. I also finally got a picture of one our titmice on the hummingbird feeder ant guard. The red cap is filled with water, so the ants can’t get past it. Anyway, the titmice have figured out that this is a great drinking spot and they go to it often. Fun!
Also, Tina from Pennsylvania sent in this photo of a little purple finch that puffed his chest out one day and dared the other birds to come near his seed supply. She calls him her little “Jimmy Cagney” finch! Tina also sent in this great picture of a dragonfly, but I think it looks more like a fancy Christmas tree ornament in some high-end catalog. She maintains that it landed in her yard and she took the picture, so we’ll include it. :-) See y’all later! Dave
P.S. I’ll post some of your photos, too! Send them to me at dheiser@wncn.com.

Missed your blogs, Dave!!!! Glad you are BACK!!! We haven’t had any Mourning Doves close enough to our deck yet.. I’ve seen and heard them–but not close. But–I do have a neat story about a Baby Cardinal. Read my blog when you have time: http://www.lightblog.com/member/slohiker/?xjMsgID=66879
I laughed at the Titmice drinking the water from your hummingbird feeders. Our Titmice prefer the dirty water from the bowl at the bottom of our tomato plants –rather than the ‘clean’ water I put out for them each day!!!!! Crazy Birds!
Tee.. he.. Christmas tree ornament. Well, I guess their bodies are kinda ornamental looking, I will have to keep my eye open for this kind of tree ornament when Im perusing those high-end catalogs! Liked your idea for an ant guard over your humming bird feeder, very clever! Like your pictures but esp like the picture of the titmouse getting a drink..makes one believe in, where’s there’s a will there’s a way!!

Tina, they make hummingbird feeders with a cup on the top –to put water in, so that you can keep the ants out. I also put some vasoline on the rope or twine –so if they climb down to check out the feeder, they won’t climb through the vasoline… I’m enjoying your pictures also!!! Betsy
Thanks Betsy, it is a great idea! I never saw that feature when I was looking for hb feeders. I only saw the bee guards. I’ll have to check it out!
Visited your blog the other day and enjoyed your pics/info also!
Family, I’m loving that you guys are checking this so often now! I want to get some fun pictures up that you all have taken, too. :-)
Tina, wish I could take credit for the ant guard idea but it was a birthday present from my wonderful wife and son. They got it at Wild Birds Unlimited for $4 I think. Looks like you can make one out of a spray paint can lid and a long screw, though. It’s kind of like a moat that protects the feeder. Of course, you can probably find a fancy version of it in your Christmas catalog…look next to the dragonfly ornaments!
Betsy, I saw your blog and enjoyed the cardinal pics. That baby is really cute! And, I didn’t know you were such a weather lover! We are getting TS Hanna tonight and tomorrow morning. Watch out for Ike…that one looks bad!
Glad everyone enjoyed the titmouse pics!
