Fun birds and gorgeous weather!

Wow! What a beautiful morning to be out bird watching today…pleasant breeze blowing, Carolina blue skies above…absolutely glorious! I refilled and cleaned our hummingbird feeder last night, so there were some happy hummers this morning. Next project is replacing ye olde seed plate. You can see from the Carolina chickadee picture below that the red plate has seen better days. It actually has a pretty good size crack in it and is letting some seed slip out. No problem though; it’s an easy fix.

Well, after a complete absence from the blog, the brown thrasher has now made two appearances in a row. You can see the yellow in its eye now much better than the previous entry. We’re still getting lots of goldfinch traffic, and my wife is really loving having these bright little birds around again. f-goldfinch-8-15.JPGI’m loving having the finch sock so close for easy pictures! Rounding out the crew are a Carolina wren (bottom left) and a tufted titmouse climbing our hummingbird pole. Have a great weekend, and enjoy the Olympics (I sure have been, especially the swimming and gymnastics)!  Dave

Hi, Dave,

I’ve had fun spending the week with a bird loving 6 year old who enjoys following your blog. It was fun to see him identify a chipping sparrow by its white eye brow and reddish head just as it appears in your blog. This little guy loves and cares about birds. His main concern at our outdoor lunch spot was making sure the little sparrow got lots of crumbs from his hamburger bun! Thanks for showing children that knowing and caring about birds is both fun and worthwhile.

Your pictures are totally amazing… So far–I have to stay inside in order to attract our birds to the deck.. Hopefully, they’ll eventually get to know me and not be too afraid!!!! I went to Lowe’s today and couldn’t find the sock to attract the goldfinch. But–I did buy some more seed (for smaller birds) and one of those seed bells. WOW–what a difference. The Tufted Titmice came out BIGTIME today and a juvenile Cardinal (like the one you took the picture of) came to visit. We also had a tiny little Cardinal which was adorable–but I didn’t get its picture!!!! I’ll keep trying. I am learning alot–and having so much fun!!!! Thanks for your help and for all of your great pictures.

Diane, hello again! Fun story…it’s neat how much fun birds can be to kids (and us adults, too)! :-) By the way, do you ever get foxes on your property around the lake?

Betsy, thanks so much! It’s great to hear your enthusiasm and success stories! Maybe try Home Depot for the finch sock? I’ve also heard from someone who found it at Wal-Mart. They come in a clear plastic tube with a white lid and light green label…about 8 inches tall.

Funny you should ask—one afternoon about three weeks ago, we did see three young foxes in our front yard. Our neighbor cautioned us not to encourage them as such daytime roaming is unusual for foxes and could indicate the presence of rabies. We also see lots of deer and other wild life. Our favorite sightings are eagles and opreys.

Oooo…eagles and ospreys! I’d love to take a good picture of one of those guys sometime. Do you see many kingfishers?
